Welcome to the

ORCHID SOCIETY OF THE SOUTHERN CAPE

Building an

Greenhouse/Shade house

1. Find a suitable site. Must have adequate light. North facing is best. Stay away from the southern areas as they are wet in winter also not enough light, then clear the area.

2. Get several quotes for materials as costs play a part in deciding what to put up. If you

decide to put a roof on you will have to submit plans to the municipality. If you decide to have a solid roof with Shade cloth below the roof, then leave adequate space.

3. Ask for advice from other growers.

4. Adequate ventilation is necessary. Put fans in depending on ventilation.

5. Colour of shade cloth. Green (no), black (Best). 40-50%, this is because black absorbs light & heat

6. Heating in winter is your choice.

7. Spray under Benches regularly for pests.

8. Benches must be able to carry weight. Use materials that are rust proof and drain-able.

Plan for low light areas as well.

10. Humidity in a greenhouse, one needs to wet the floors / have sprayers under the

benches.

11. Go into your Orchid house to decide whether to add shade or to move plants.
